August 6th 1965

The Richmond Festival of 1965 marked a turning point in the future of
the the British R & B scene in a similar way that the Monterey Pop
festival was a celebration of the California sound.

The three main headliners, The Yardbirds, Animals and The Who
all had "hit" records. Each of these bands were "R & B" acts yet
their success in the mainstream was an opposite step away from their
roots

The surviving 16mm film blows away any concert footage from the 60's.
The Animals are simply amazing and quite underrated.
Jeff Beck is really wonderful with the Yardbirds which had become a "pop" group.
A year later Clapton returned to Richmond with Cream, a real "blues" band
! Best of all, is the footage of "The Who". Here's a finely honed band in
action playing a highly energetic short set. The Blues festival was a major turning point for The Who as they were able
to keep their "purist" London Audience without "losing their religion". |

Watch carefully and you'll see Keith telling Roger to f-off. At one stage
in 1965 Roger was given his own cymbal to smash ! Pete is the total Mr Arrogance as he
re-tunes his Rickenbacker mid-song and you can see how the whole band is propelled
by Keith's constant pounding. Keith turns to a ball of sweat during
"Shout and Shimmy".

The performance is the classic live Who of 1965, no overdubs, no piano
and the amazing
combination of VOX, Rickenbacker and Danelectro. |
